Why We Offer Rock & White Salt
At Online Rock Salt, we understand that effective de-icing is crucial for keeping everyone safe during winter, helping to prevent dangerous car accidents, trips, and falls.
With so many types of de-icers available, choosing the right products for our customers has always been our main priority. With some de-icing solutions being highly specialised and suited for extreme environments, their practicality for everyday use often depends on factors like cost and typical weather conditions.
This is why we focus on offering practical, affordable solutions tailored to the UK climate—empowering our customers to tackle icy conditions effectively and with minimal disruption.
Importance of De-Icing
Winter weather presents significant safety challenges due to icy roads, driveways and pavements. In the UK alone, icy conditions lead to around 1,000 deaths or serious injuries on roads each year. The economic impact of untreated ice is equally significant. Without proper ice and snow removal measures, delays caused by hazardous conditions could cost the UK economy an estimated £2 billion annually. In comparison, the £150 million spent on salting and de-icing in the UK every year is a small price to pay for keeping the roads safe and businesses operating smoothly.
Whilst the responsibility for de-icing major roads falls to the National Highway Agency and individual local councils, on average only 40% of the roads in the UK are being de-iced.
This leaves approximately 60% of roads and other areas (driveways, car parks, pathways) untreated, posing risks for drivers and pedestrians.
De-Icing Products
At Online Rock Salt, we prioritise practicality, affordability, and safety when it comes to choosing de-icing products. This is why we recommend rock salt and white de-icing salt over other de-icing alternatives.
Unlike other products, de-icing salt is significantly more affordable. As many of the alternative products are designed for specialised industrial settings, rock and white salt are the perfect solution to everyday de-icing usage, saving you time and money by not investing in unnecessary high-cost solutions.
For example, prilled urea (a non-corrosive de-icer) is a popular choice for areas like airports or multi-storey car parks where preventing corrosion is critical and de-icing salt is not suitable. However, its effectiveness is limited to milder temperatures, working only down to about -3°C to -4°C, which makes it unreliable in colder weather.
Our Icethaw Ultra brine solution is an excellent alternative to this with it being as corrosive as the rainwater and effective at de-icing at even -26°C.
Rock and white de-icing salt are well-suited for non-industrial settings, offering effective ice prevention at temperatures as low as -15°C. Although they are slightly more corrosive than specialised products, this can be managed with proper application—such as applying only the necessary amount and rinsing off any residue once temperatures rise.
In addition to their effectiveness, rock and white salt are ideal for the UK climate, which rarely drops below -15°C. They are easy to store in grit bins, have no expiry date and are versatile enough for various uses, from pavements to private roads or car parks. These qualities make them an incredibly practical and reliable choice for both businesses and homeowners.
At Online Rock Salt, we believe everyone should have access to high-quality de-icing products that are both affordable and widely available. By offering premium rock and white de-icing salt, we make it easier for our clients to maintain safe and accessible premises. By enabling individuals and businesses to treat any areas they consider important, we can significantly reduce the hazards posed by icy conditions. This collective effort not only enhances safety for everyone but also helps to minimize disruptions during the winter months.
