How Much Salt do I Need?
Both Rock and White Salt have the same spreading rates and the amount you will need to apply is very much dependent on the weather conditions. The spreading rate is measured in grammes per square metre and is different between just cold icy days and those when snow fall is also expected.
It is clear if you have used too much salt previously. After the snow and ice has thawed there should be no visible salt left on the ground, if you can still see salt crystals (not the red clay from rock salt, residue from this is normal) then you have probably applied too much.
Normally we recommend 10-15 grams per square metre if it is only ice you are trying to combat. If snow is likely to fall, we recommend upping that to 20-30 grams per square metre to ensure that the ground is still safe to walk and drive upon.
You can work out how much you need to clear your carpark or pathway using the table below:
If snow is expected it is worth spreading salt preemptively and again after the storm has passed to help thaw the fallen snow.
Minimum effective salt spreading rates:
Product | Approximate area cleared in icy conditions* | Approximate area cleared in snowy conditions* |
---|---|---|
Rock Salt 10kg | 666 Square Meters / 60 Car parking Spaces | 333 Square Meters / 30 Car parking Spaces |
Rock Salt Large Packs | 1666 Square Meters / 145 Car parking Spaces | 833 Square Meters / 73 Car parking Spaces |
Rock Salt Bulk Bag | 56,644 Square Meters / 4930 Car parking Spaces | 28,322 Square Meters / 2465 Car parking Spaces |
White Salt 10kg | 666 Square Meters / 60 Car parking Spaces | 333 Square Meters / 30 Car parking Spaces |
White Salt Large Packs | 1666 Square Meters / 145 Car parking Spaces | 833 Square Meters / 73 Car parking Spaces |
White Salt Bulk Bag | 56,644 Square Meters / 4930 Car parking Spaces | 28,322 Square Meters / 2465 Car parking Spaces |
* Please note this is a rough guide and not a guarantee as it depends on so many factors (e.g. temperature, depth of snow or ice, accuracy of spreading etc).
